My friends and I just started our own server. Going through the game, two of us working towards progression, and the other two gathering and building. When it came time to move to Sylvan's Cradle the game forced all four of us to move together. Is there a way to turn that off? So the guys that progress fast can play without forcing the guys that just want to build to have to go with. In other words, disable forced group fast travel?

No, sadly this is an effect of not having the official online version, which was multiple servers running together.
The dedicated server software can only run one realm at a time, so if one person wants to travel, everyone else has to go with them too.
There is a workaround of doing some things in solo mode (e.g. gathering) while the rest of the group does things on the server (e.g. building / crafting).
