im on the quest lessons of the loa, and i have the first 2 items it wants, and i have found the fen bass itself, but i cannot figure out how to turn it to oil. i have checked my recipes, and as far as i know the excellent mortar is the correct station to craft it at. what am i missing?

You craft animal based oils at the tanning station 😉
You unlock animal oil under the tanning station in the progression tree as well

You would benefit by reading one of the short fishing guides you can find on the web. To be even briefer: Your pole should be built for melee damage. Put 5 or 7 foundations down to make a "U" shape so the fish won't zoom off to the left or right and make it hard to manage tension. Watch the tension meter - you crit when it's near the halfway mark. I've not done it but if it hits the top it should mean the line broke and you lost the fish.
