#Help with building

Noob here
I'd like to start building crude structures (walls etc.) but I'm not able to place anything. I have all the right ingredients but the item (ghost) remains red and I'm not able to build anything. Do I need to hold something in my hand like a hammer? I haven't upgraded anything so maybe that's it?

Also I'm assuming it's a smaller house, but when you look at a wall, what numbers out of 300 does it show?
