I noticed they do not work behind a wall or on a different floor (so much for tidy), is there a distance they do not work at too?

When you go to place the augment down to the appropriate work station it will show you a long green line if it is connecting with it. When that distance fails to show you are too far from it. It's about 1.5 squares or so.
