Any idea why a friend who started on an easy realm is unable to join me on a hard starting realm? I am able to join their realm, but they can't join mine.

they started on an easy realm and they cant join you on a hard realm but you can join them on an easy realm... thats literally the reason..

what you can do, is make your estate card for your world, join them and give them your estate card, they then make a crude portal and put the estate card in it so they can then join your home/world..
