Well, I guess it's the fact that they're drawn so differently. The old one was an outline of a bird with ostentatious feathering drawn out in fire. The new one looks to me like a normal bird, but with a fiery aura surrounding it. While the effects are much better looking, the bird itself doesn't catch my eye, the flames do

What i do if I’m doing something new is I trace it, then try to just copy it, then try to draw without a reference
But the non-reference one tends to go badly.

My first OC is Ethan, he is an engineer with angel wings, and has the ability to shapeshift into any living thing. I have been working on this OC since 4th grade.
Also it's a human male.
My second OC is Churo, brown quadrupedal dragon with a similar design to the remastered Spyro the dragon.
