IMO learning to draw via referencing images is a totally fine method of leaning how to draw. heck I did it way back in the day.
though it's important that you don't use it as a crutch for all of your art, and one should to it in order to learn things such as line shape, proportions, stylization, etc
then you can start drawing freehand and developing your own style

an easy thing to make in maya is a doughnut with small sprinkles

A little concept for a Below Zero: a relative of the ||pinnacarid|| based upon a leopard seal and orca. (I don’t know if there is a creature that fits this niche because I’m playing Below Zero Blind and haven’t explored too far). It shares the same color palette and awesome gradient orange and blue gradient as it relative. The spots on the side, tale and fins follow that gradient scheme. The spots on the tale and fins are supposed to look like eyes in order to distract predators, which may go for the fins and tale instead of a killing blow, or rolling them into thinking that it is always watching them.

A leviathan idea for a biome concept: The sleeper reaper. A relative of the tropical reaper leviathan that has adapted to a deepwater scavenging lifestyle. They're slightly shorter, but much stockier than reaper leviathans. (Sorry if it's not great, the only tool I have is a mouse)

i realize that i made it unintentionally cute. The reflective eyes were supposed to be like actual deep sea animals, in that they have large, reflecting eyes to catch every bit of light. Kinda just made it look cute

It really depends on what I'm doing, what progams I'm using, and how I'm rendering it. simplistic styles are faster, if i use 3d programs its faster, and if i photobash its faster. but if im hand painting every detail, it takes me maybe a day to do a fully rendered piece?
