Nah, I mean - listen, think about it. It's a very, very small connection, compared to the hilt of traditional swords. The blade's metal extends down into the hilt, is covered by wood or other metal, and sometimes wrapped in other materials

it'll be a bit tough since a lot of the character is in pieces but lemme seeeee

i think one of the main issue with it is that the character is currently in pieces, so you need to ask yourself not just "does this look right anatomically" but you also"if I put this back together, does anything look off?
And make sure you're also looking at it from multiple angles as well. mirroring your canvas is the best way to check and see if anything looks weird or slanted that your eye might not have cought originally
So for example, here it is pieced together and flipped
it's a little slanted but nothing a few tweaks with transforming amnd polishing can't fix

of course not all dogs are built the same AND the character is currently in a pretty viseral state right now, but just some things to keep in mind
so what I ended up doing here for my own version was sketch out a quick rough of the splayed out pose as a whole, cutting and adjusting and transforming individual pieces around until the pose looked right, then I chopped that up further and scattered them around. from there I can use the rough as a guildline to draw over with a more refined sketch or even a full lineart layer to finish it up.
this is how I would go about doing it of course, and I understand this was more of a vent peice for you, but hopefully this helps in some way? Just keep practicing, double checking with references, and don't worry about getting messy when you're putting basics down
