Mermaids/mermen don't have knees. Their tails would curve sinuously, not bend sharply unless there's something very wrong with them. Watch how fish and dolphins move - there isn't a sharp bend in the way they swim.

Regardless, have you ever seen a snake move? They're practically all ribcage. Their bodies don't allow for that kind of bending unless it's dead.
