I didn't select a free hero when I've been prompted to and instead leveled up the Hero's Journey first in order to see how this exactly works and now that I've got a few levels I'm unable to select a free hero anymore.

You most likely unlocked storm. If you didn't select the free hero at level one then it would have automatically unlocked storm for you. You should still be able to change the hero at level 5 and choose who you would like to unlock next.
We definitely hear you on the unlock flow being confusing and are looking at addressing this. Thanks for bearing with us as we work to get it right!

Oh, I see! So you're allowing us to choose which heroes we want to unlock at these specific Hero's Journey levels! That's a really cool system. I just failed to get it. I've wanted to get Storm anyway so it's not a problem for me personally. Thank you for the quick response!
