How can I have agent mode as default instead of terminal? Like "always on" agent mode..

Hi @placid briar. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Warp does not currently offer a global setting to make Agent Mode the default or "always on" input mode for every new session or pane. By default, Warp uses auto-detection to switch between Terminal Mode and Agent Mode based on whether your input looks like a shell command or natural language. You can disable auto-detection and manually switch modes, but there is no explicit "always Agent Mode" setting.

How to stay in Agent Mode as much as possible:

  • Manual switching: You can lock into Agent Mode by clicking the Agent icon in the input switcher, or by using the keyboard shortcut (CMD + I on macOS, CTRL + I on Windows/Linux). This will keep you in Agent Mode for that session until you switch modes or open a new pane/tab, but it does not persist across all new sessions automatically.
  • Force Agent Mode for a command: Start your input with an asterisk (*) to force Agent Mode for that input.
  • Auto-detection: If enabled, Warp will switch to Agent Mode when it detects natural language, but this is not the same as "always on" Agent Mode.

Currently, you need to manually select Agent Mode each time you want to use it as the default for a new session or pane. There is no setting to make Agent Mode the default for all inputs or sessions at this time. If this is important to your workflow, you may want to submit a feature request to the Warp team or upvote existing requests for persistent Agent Mode defaults.

For more details, see the documentation on Input Modes and Agent Mode.
