#Unsupported MIME type when trying to read `.md` files

Hi, I just started using Warp today and I’ve run into an issue. When I try to open a .md file in Agent mode, I get the error:

Response stream finished unexpectedly with internal error: file has an unsupported MIME type

It seems like Warp only supports images and PDFs, but not plain text or markdown. I couldn’t find any documentation or mention of this limitation.

The only workaround I’ve found is copying the contents of the .md file directly into the prompt, which isn’t very convenient.

Is this expected behavior, or should .md/.txt files be supported as plain text?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @glossy scarab. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Short answer: it’s expected today.

  • Agent Mode currently supports attaching images and PDFs; attaching local .md/.txt as context isn’t documented as supported. I can’t find any source stating that plain text/markdown files can be attached to Agent Mode, and your error aligns with an unsupported MIME type. I’m sorry, but there’s no information about .md/.txt being supported as attachments in Agent Mode in the provided docs.

What you can do instead:

  • Open and run Markdown inside Warp via the Markdown Viewer (not Agent attachment). You can open .md files in a pane and click runnable code blocks, or CMD-click links to open .md files from terminal output (see “Markdown Viewer” and “Files, Links, & Scripts”) (Markdown Viewer) (Files, links & scripts).
  • If you need the agent to reference content, pasting the relevant sections is the current workaround. There’s also ongoing interest/requests around agent-accessible notebooks/rules and CLI for managing content, but they’re not available yet (e.g., requests to manage notebooks/rules programmatically and for agents to work with Warp Drive content) (Agent-based asset management request) and a report that the agent doesn’t have access to Warp Drive notebooks (agent lacks notebook access).

If your goal is simply viewing/running commands from markdown inside Warp (not as agent context), that is supported via the Markdown Viewer and can be configured to open .md by default (Settings > Features > General) (Markdown Viewer).
