#[WIP] Promo (Fan) Art for 1.0!

Recently I checked up on this game and found out that 1.0 is coming out soon! I am super excited and decided to brush this piece up and hopefully finish it by next week before the launch!

I started this piece almost two years ago and didn't finish it due to my life just getting busier at the time. I've been able to have some time for myself though as this year winds down and I checked back on the game and to my surprise, I found out the 1.0 launch was soon! It honestly gave me the motivation to come back and try to bring this piece to a finish- I owe it to the amazing community and devs who have helped create and shape this game. Just from the Early Access, I think I've clocked in over 300 hours and I'm excited to add more to it on Aug 27th! I hope with this piece I can give a little bit back to the community who have helped the game so much with their feedback and ideas (I still remember when I had to have all my workbenches out because you couldn't cycle back to older recipes from newer workbenches holy moly).

I'll update this thread with more WIP's if I think significant progress is made- I'll make a new post once I finish it completely though.

Some things I still have in mind (not everything but off the top of my head):

  • Add a couple more enemies:
    Desert Scarab
    Maybe another Caveling?
    One more enemy if I can squeeze it in
    -Rework the Rune Song a bit- right now it's in a bit of a rough shape but I have plans to clean it up
    -Render characters
    -Add more environmental cues? Was thinking possibly caveling architecture in some way but not sure

Definitely agree- it's something that I have been playing around with and honestly have been taking a lot of artistic liberties with
Making the piece, I was referring a lot to Azeos' arena/Wilderness where the ceiling isn't as prevalent in certain areas and light kinda shines through. Something like this might be a closer compromise to showing that the setting is somewhere underground!

I actually did have the silhouette of Azeosโ€™ shadow casted on the waterfall in the back in an earlier version- the problem was that it wasnโ€™t very understandable at first glance. Itโ€™s still something Iโ€™m willing to explore with more time if able! I also like the feather idea as well- would be a nice reference if I canโ€™t make the shadow idea work! Or Iโ€™ll do both haha

Iโ€™m glad to hear that I inspired you! Please keep us updated if you start a piece as well- I would love to see it and if our schedules aligned, we can chill together and draw art for 1.0โ€™s release! No pressure though!

Hey Julian! Likewise, super excited to see you guys bringing Core Keeper out of Early Access! From the moment I started the game, I annoyed so many of my friends into buying it LOL

Hope things are going well with you and the team! I'm really hyped to play 1.0 next week! Will probably run a magic build after seeing some of the previews!

One burning question I have if you could answer: whose idea was it to make the Shrooman in the game make chicken clucking noises when they die? I remember killing my first shrooman and laughing when I heard the noise play. I love small things like that in this game LOL

Update
It's been a WILD past twelve hours- MH Wilds gameplay footage started coming out and right before then, we got news that CORE KEEPER 1.0 is AVAILABLE to us all tomorrow! I ended up going to bed at like 5 AM because I was just up all night consuming all the content coming out.
We got an Early Earlier Access! ๐Ÿฅน

That being said, the painting is coming along slowly- I spent a good portion of last night kinda finalizing how I want to stylize the characters. In my initial drafts, you can see me going for more of a rough painterly rendering style but last night I explored a more stylized/cell-shaded look and I think I'm happy with it! The Bomb Guy is probably the most rendered of the four but I'm slowly working on all of them together one-by-one. As for the enemies, I think I'll go with something similar but keep the lineart on the lighter end so that they're not competing with the heroes too much for attention.

Another thing you might notice are a couple (new) familiar faces! I added the Desert Scarab as well as our beloved flying turkey in the sky! I don't think I'll be rendering Azeos THAT much- the level of detail he has right now is about how much I kind of want him to be at. I'll probably work on the silhouette a bit more but I wanted him to have a more subtle presence in the scene!

I'm still thinking if I want to add in one more enemy but I'm not sure where or what I would add. Moreover, I am scared for myself and my lack of time management skills as I REALLY REALLY want to just binge the Early-er Access content that's coming out tomorrow but I promised that I would bring this piece to a finish Skeleton.

Ideas that came into my head;
the person on the left should be a bow-user, simple wood/iron bow
the person on the right should be holding a warlock book, with a slight blue-glow around the outstretched hand
make the blade the broken blade/hilt

why break the blade?... because then you can have it is as a 'normal' scene
and then follow it up with a variation of the exact same scene setup, but upgrade all the weapons to the legendary ones (phantom spark bow, full runeblade, soul pickace, larger mana glow?)

UPDATE
This will (hopefully) be the last update before I finish up the piece! I'm nearing the end (at least, I'd like to think... You always seem to find something you don't like as you work more on a piece) and I decided to do a few more big changes.

Biggest one you can probably tell is that I added a new character! When I created the initial composition, it really was revolved around the experience at the time (IIRC I think I made it around the Desert of Beginning update?). I wasn't really planning on adding more but after trying out Ver.99, I felt like it was important to show a bit more of the magic in the game within the illustration. I binged a LOT of Ver.99 and mained some magic/summoning and even though it's a small portion of the game, I really enjoyed the new magic system and hope to see how it progresses in 1.0 as well as future content updates! I think there's so much potential in it to do/create awesome weapons!

Other small notes are that I ended up removing a slime in favor of a Acid Larva- helped me fulfill that initial idea of adding another enemy type and while increasing diversity/interesting roster on display! Other than that, it's been just rendering/polishing things up to a crisp finish! I've also cleaned up the Brute, Core Sentry and Caveling Hunter- they look so nice!
I might really really regret it but I DO have thoughts on MAAAAAYBE adding ONE more enemy type but I'm still uncertain and I think I'll focus on just making sure the piece is fairly polished before I even consider it. I still want to revisit the Rune Song's shape to solidify it- I plan on just making it in a separate file and then copy pasting it over to make sure it's nice and symmetrical. I also still need to work on the environmental details like the jars/pots, mountains etc...

I've had a LOT of fun working on this- I think it's a piece that I made with a lot of love as I keep trying to shove new things that come to my mind from playing the game. I'm aiming to match the devs pace and get this done soon for 1.0! I hope to see you Core Keepers next time not here but on the post with the finished piece!

P.S. Here's the drawing of the Mage that I did for this piece! I hope she finds out how to use that tome and fast- I don't think the bat is particularly happy with their master but unfortunately you don't get to pick who summons you! I actually drew her on a separate file and then essentially copy pasted her over since it was an idea that I wasn't TOO sure at the time if I wanted to do but I ended up just going for it. I didn't draw her feet as I knew it was probably going to be hidden by the cliff so she's got stubbies for now...

Hope you guys are doing well- you're almost at the finish line! I've been able to get a ton of friends to try out Core Keeper over this free weekend and they've all loved it! We're super excited to continue on our journey in a couple days! I've been rocking a hybrid mage/summoner build and it's been fun to just run around letting my subterrier stun things while my bats let them experience bullet hell! I hope to expand upon this build in 1.0 ๐Ÿ˜

PS one of my friends lamented that the chef set doesn't give cooking bonuses- I hope this will be looked at ๐Ÿ˜ข
