We expect lots of new Explorers to start their adventures when Core Keeper hits 1.0 on August 27th, and we can't wait to welcome them here to this amazing community. There are so many seasoned adventurers here who have hours and hours of in-game experience under their belts, so we wanted to ask you what advice would you give to new players embarking on their first expeditions to the underground? This doesn't necessarily have to be early-game advice, maybe it's more something you wish you'd taken into consideration on your first playthrough.

My advice would probably be something simple, such as "keep one of everything, you never know what might come in handy much later on in the game."

Over to you, Explorers!

I've been through this already with watching new players on twitch 😉 So without any major new "must haves" for the 1.0 here is my top-10 advices;

  • Torches have a hotswap key (Left Shift by default) and do not need to take up valuable hotbar space, they can sit anywhere in inventory
  • Workbenches can pull materials from any adjacent chest
  • crop farms should be designed with a 5x5 area layout in mind due to the later-game || sprinkler || coverage
  • protect your cattle! get a door/gate on those breaches into the meadows!
  • most things can be 'collected' with a shovel instead of smashed/destroyed
  • painting with paint brushes changes the objects design as well as colour, experiment!
  • you can utilise the extra armour tabs (until you have a use for them) and the 'trash can' input as more inventory space, you can also 'hold' an item on the mouse (pick it up, don't place it until you are ready )
  • the 'r' button (by default) will sort your inventory when it is open
  • reinforce your tools often, carry multiple pick axes and shovels for longer trips
  • this one especially for multiplayer: get to the iron tier 'quickly' and build a Cartography table, everyone should use it often to share map-data between all players.

Ooh this is such a good collection of advice 😮

Use a Hoe to remove tiles that can spawn enemies.

I have a piece of advice: Dying isn't good and doesn't help you progress in the game, and may even be harmful towards your progress. For example: dying in water with the only boat in your possession could make you use more resources for a second Boat.

when you are able to mine the earlier materials quickly, go back and search through those biomes. they often have unique items that surpass just an ordinary weapon or valuables

My advice is to make sure to start a farm early so you have resources for food right away. Make sure to keep tools in your hotbar for easy access but also because you keep your hotbar if you die. And last but not least, don't be afraid to build somr tacks later for faster travel times xD

My advice is to stockpile literally everything 😂 granted I may be a hoarder by nature, but it's paid off so many times when I need to craft something and I already have all the materials!

Your bace is more than the place you keep your benches and chests, it is also where you come back to, so make it a place your proud to see after a long adventure.

Outside of what's above:

  • Farms in/near/around your base are undeniably valuable. Start one for every skill tree and that you can think of.

  • You can't "remove" a water tile. You will have to place a ground piece in the water tile (and all adjacent water tiles) and shovel the ground piece to create a 'hole'

  • When crafting with limited materials in the beginning, focus on your pickaxe. Craft your weapon next if you can kite mobs, craft gear next if you are still learning how to kite mobs.

  • if the darkness overwhelms you and you don't know where to go/start when exploring, I find it easier to "follow the shiny".

  • Keep a Hoe tool on you

  • Keep EVERYTHING. Figure out what to do with it later. (Or look it up if you don't want to figure it out)

  • Items marked as Valuable can be collected/displayed or sold.

  • Cattle will not follow you through doors or doorways

  • Read through all of the skills in the skill tree to get an idea of which path you want to go down. You will not be able to select all of them. You need to max out (5) at least 1 of each tier to progress down the tree. If you mess up, you can reset using the coin currency. You will never lose skill points you earned.

  • Do not underestimate the non-combat skills (like stated above, read through every skill on the skill tree).

  • When searching for Iron or Tin a good strategy i would recommend is going to the location and getting the pickaxe made from that location's ore and then coming after and running through ghorm's tunnel looking for the sparkles in walls.
#
  • Collect all the mechanical parts and do not throw them out or thrash them. Save them for boats, teleporters, and core idol things
#
  • use bomb peppers mixed with bloat oats and heart berries to make 2 easy and useful recipes
#
  • This one is a bit obvious but i still see people placing 1 of each work bench, on the left side of the interface you can swap between the workbenches. Same goes for anvils
#
  • Join the discord

  • Pets are worth it because they can provide very important bonuses
#
  • With the new update and its new classes i would focus on a "Gear build" so for example ranged, poison, or thorns. The game lets you level up gear so you can take level 3 ranger armor to level 20 and shred bosses with throwing knives

My biggest advice is to keep most items you get; almost all items end up being useful and to organize your chests from the start. I have like 12 chests full of items that are unorganized and it takes forever to find anything.

#

But I don't have the spoons to organize all of them

Setting up a mine-cart rail system early on makes early game travel a breeze! I like to have a rail heading in every cardinal direction from the core.
Also, make sure to utilize the marker system on your map. If you find something and you’re not sure what it’s used for, put a marker on it and come back later.

Most people don't realize it and I know it's everywhere: exploring. Exploring unlocks so much stuff and is beneficial for both early to late game. Firstly, exploring increases the understanding of the biome they choose, and they can collect resources midway! That isn't my only top though. This second one is for the people who have lower end PCs like me: pick everything up. Leaving a bunch of walls around might not seem bad, but it can cause lag on some worlds. I'll say, I have a legacy world and dang it's laggy. Pick that stuff up! Don't ruin another world for that extra slime :/

Look through the menus. Gameplay Settings has Seasonal Overrides if you want to start a world using a Seasonal event (or turn one off if it's not your vibe). Controls lets you rebind everything and includes hotkeys you might not have otherwise known about.

Get a mining setup for every type of ore boulder you find as soon as possible. It's extremely helpful for building, repairing, and especially later crafting when you get crazy items like portals and speedboats that are really expensive.

Also, make wood farms otherwise you'll run out when you need it most

Shift for Torch.
Use E+Q when Putting stuff into chests.
And don't freaking Google anything. I never googled anything before I finished the game once and I had a blast exploring everything the game offers on my own 🙂

  • Cooking is life CookingFinal
  • Don't hesitate to cook some larva AmberLarva
  • Larva meat BigLarva can be disgusting, but surprisingly tasty
  • BombPepper + any other ingredient is the best beginner recipe (boost the only thing you need when you start, SPEED) Campfire

My advice is when fighting the brood boss, keep your distance far enough that her swarm won't reach and attack with range, it's a lot safer that way.

Here we go, after 200+ hours :
-Fish in every new biome, it's the easiest way to get locked chests and keys, also some unique loot
-Eat GlowTulip you'll see the whole map
-Gold is the only ore that doesn't have a workbench, but it does sell for 15 coins per ingot
-If you're having problems with a boss, you haven't used enough food buffs or potions

The most important aspect of fun in an Exploration Sandbox game, is the desire to explore, so going in blind with a willingness to test things out and learn would multiply your joy tenfold

It is always important to keep scraps and salvage and repair bench on you. That way, you can quickly repair your equipment while out exploring the caves, and while you're at it, you can scrap the stuff you don't need to gain some resources.

always have an orange slime at the start of the games, since Potion is the very most important items you need, perhaps more than food

Mining with your hand is slightly slower than a copper pick, but once you mine more you wont need anymore a pickaxe in the starter area.

Get a feather REAL QUICK, dashing is a core function to survive practically anything

Anddd most importantly, try to organize chests, might be a pain in the head but it will be more rewarding

  • If you plan to fight primarily with melee, I recommend a ranged pet. If you primarily fight with ranged, try a melee pet. Magic user? Try a support pet.

  • Don't underestimate summons. They can add some extra hits on your opponent or help keep foes at bay.

  • If a fight is too hard, you can always leave and give yourself a chance to level up your skills or your weapons and armor before coming back better prepared. (Also try to bring plenty of food with you.)

  • If you cook a variety of dishes, you can look at them in the cookbook to see what their stats are to help find the dishes you may want to stock up on.

**1. Ranged will be your best friend early game.
2. Don't forget to reinforce your items.
3. Waypoints (those glowing circles you can find) can be mined at some point, you can farm tons of them by hopping from world to world and getting the first slime boss's in each. It's a cheap way to get an item with the same functionality as portals which are hella expensive.
4. Gardening is REALLY important.
5. Check all of the stat trees even if one of them doesn't pique your interest. Some offer effects that apply to other weapon classes too.
6. Stack up on health potions and play like a coward if you're new. You'll eventually learn how to beat whatever hides in the shadows anyway. Saves lots of time from having to run back to your loot.
7. Automate as much as possible: wood farms, gardening with sprinklers, ore miners, maybe even a mob farm.
