When a game catches our eye on Steam, we often go in with a idea of what to expect. Core Keeper is described as a "1-8 player mining sandbox adventure", which is a pretty accurate description but, of course, it doesn't encompass the game in its entirety.

I know that, when I started playing Core Keeper, I expected it to be a lot more linear than it was. I thought there'd be a very clear structure of "go do A, then B, then C, etc.," and I was pleasantly surprised to find I could approach things from a couple of different angles and at my own pace.

Was Core Keeper what you expected it to be going in? Were you surprised by anything about the game? Let us know!

I didn't have any expectations going in, I found the game in the 2 week long beta, and never saw anything on it, but I was definitely impressed with what I found

I saw a video of someone playing the game for the first time in Early access to share the game with his viewers(How I found the game). I got a pretty good idea of what the game was then. Got the game about a month later. Exceeded my expectations when I played it vs that video. There’s a lot to do and so much to explore. And even unstated, the world lore is so interesting. Im super excited to see where the game goes in the future

when i first started playing, i thought i just bought hipster minecraft plus terarria. But after the first boss and going on, i had so much more fun in one hour of playing than i ever had in minecraft.

Truthfully I already knew exactly what kind of gameplay I was getting into since I had watched a streamer play it with a group of friends, and it just so happened that I dig these kinds of sandbox exploration games, so I ultimately bought the game for myself so I could do the things I had yet to see.

I was introduced to the game by a YouTube video giving first impressions on it, so I had a decent idea of what to expect from the early game going into it. I was still blown away by how much content there was despite the game having just released.

I found the game from the crossover with terraria and then I proceeded to play the game blind (which was the first time of me doing so), but after I opened the wall my brain was going on overdrive with what would be there, like I thought maybe there’s another biome outside the azeos wilderness or that kind of stuff. Those thoughts were fun. Overall I loved ck from my first impressions.

I didn’t have any expectations since I went into the game blindly around the Paws and Claws update.

Beginning Core Keeper right next to the boss statues instantly reminded me of Valheim, so it already felt like home to me (a player who has too many hours in Valheim as well 😅)

After my first playthrough, nothing was too surprising for me from a gameplay standpoint. But what I got in the end is a game that fuses my favorite Valheim and Terraria aspects in a pixel art aesthetic I can really get behind.

Core Keeper has SO much potential and I’m very excited to see where it can go JingleJamCookie

I wish I could remember the YouTube channel that first introduced me to Core Keeper but the first thing that caught my eye was the top down game play, fun world exploration, and incredible pixel art style. I already had a feeling I'd enjoy the game, however, I never could have guessed how quickly it became one of my absolute favorites! And honestly, the best part so far has been being a part of this community and seeing how much the game has evolved since I first bought it in early access, which is now rapidly approaching a full release. The devs are so creative, welcoming, and kind to us and I swear the game just keeps better and better every time I play it!

I decided to pick it up on sale after recognizing it from the Terraria crossover, and I gotta say... it was what I thought it was gonna be plus a lot more! It met the expectations and then breezed even further past them. I'm a believer in its future based on its already strong showing in the beta.

50% of Core Keeper is what I expected, the other half was not.

I first started playing in the middle of the Christmas event and was confused why things looked different from the let's plays I had watched. For the most part, the game was what I expected, but that graphical difference, without realizing it was an event for days, had me scratching my head.

I was handed a Steam Key, told it was a new Early Access multiplayer base builder to try out. It was definitely more atmospheric than I expected, between the lighting, the soundtrack, and the art style. It made the base feel super cozy, and it made exploring more enticing.
...Which drove me up the wall because I wanted to explore when my friend wanted me to help decorate.

As someone who started on the earliest access builds, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of content. I remember my first time going into the wilderness and just being amazed by the fact that there was more to the game. It makes me so pumped for 1.0 because there's going to be so much new stuff to find and explore, so I kinda get to relive that experience. On the more critical side, I spent a lot of time playing terraria, so there were times in core keeper that I expected something to be new and different, and it just... wasn't? Not that I don't love the progression, but it always felt weird to me that every single biome so far has had the rough outline of "go in, get enough ore for a workbench and a pickaxe, then come back and get more ore for the other workbenches and gear". Would love to see a twist in main line gear progression, because thats something I haven't really experienced since my first time playing.

My boyfriend told me about the game and bought it for me. I did not expect to play it with him as much but I really liked it. I have hard time keeping playing one game but in no time it became my safe space and I played it over 120 hours by now. I just love it. 1.0 launch kinda shaken me and its harder to not notice the changes (I am just too autistic) but it is really pretty and nice game.

I love this game so much, I got game pass again to play it and I'm considering buying it outright off steam because it's so good. It's everything I expected and more, thank you so much for making this game. I'm finding I'm moving away from the immediate gratification games now as I'm getting older, this is really good for a bit of grinding and a bit of everything else too.

Absolutely not. This game is hidden gem. From the trailer it looked like a little fun pass-time cave exploring game, but then it took a big twist and had an awesome crafting and base building element too! Was not expecting yhat

I joined the game during the free weekend as Steam said it was like Stardew and Terraria (2 games I'm obsessed with) and honestly, it exceeded all expectations! The graphics are beautiful, its so unique and I have 50+ hours so no it was not what I was expecting at ALL. <33

Core Keeper was listed as a monthly pick in the PlayStation store for PS5. I expected something like Terraria with a top down Stardew Valley style. I had no idea it would be as addictive (in a good way) as I am finding it. Really enjoy this community as well.

I was first told that CK was pretty much a top down Terraria. I know the comparison has likely been made so many times the devs groan but I'd say the game is similar in quality.

The rest of it is all in due time if the devs want it to. A lot of the qol is here which is really nice and now it's just seeing the content fleshed out and such.

So I'd say for the most part I've enjoyed 80% of what I've seen and expected.
