Inspired by https://discord.com/channels/851842678340845600/1231876286146936833in suggestions ...
We wondered if this was already possible. We decided it very certainly is. ๐Ÿ™‚
We first went for a simple checkers board, pedestals are black, planters are white, doubling up by placing berries in them!

Deciding it was actually difficult to see the painted floor under the planters.
We needed something else.
So for the chess set, Golden food is white, normal food is black.

  • Carrock Rook (because stone, lol!)
  • Hearty Horses
  • Bomb Bishops
  • Grumpy Kings
  • Luna Queens
  • Tulip Pawns

Put up some signage to remind us what the pieces are.
Hands-off/Let go rule was once the pedestal is down and topped/filled.
And then we had a game to see how easy it was to play/move ... and my friend beat me ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Then we cleaned up the area a bit, ready for when we want to play again.

๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ This was fun ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  • added a small side area for placing 'captured' pieces
  • changed the 'white' pedestals from wooden ones to city/metro/glass ones as we had enough hanging around (okay I had to head to the sea and hunt down two more, but whatever) ๐Ÿ™‚
#

the funny thing is, as the 'pawns' get taken the area/game gets slowly darker - it's like a countdown to impending doom ๐Ÿ˜‚

I love this lmfao

This is absolutley mind blowing to me! I absolutely love the idea of the board getting darker when the pawns are taken. @limpid spire would you mind us sharing this (with credit) in an upcoming community post on Steam? ๐Ÿ™‚

preferably the last screenshot (this one #1232075118637879356 message ), but you can also take anything here for a build-up > final style thing too

Ahh didn't spot the tag! Thank you ๐Ÿ˜„

It's okay, we're all human, small mistakes/oversights happen all the time.
I think in general it would be safe to say that anything I've posted on the discord in any thread is "good" to be shared ๐Ÿ‘
However, I appreciate you asking/checking for confirmation. ๐Ÿ™‚ It is a show of respect for player/poster from/to admin/devs. A human touch that alot of big studios severely lack these days.

Glad I could inspire this!

I love that idea

Would have been a cool entry for Scene Makers!

limpid spire

it would have... unfortunately the idea and the design came just a bit late for me to submit for the 22nd cut-off
and not fitting of the dimension sizes

#

plus an abundance of Golden food (maybe way before a player could obtain - like we've grown these with love and effort!)
.. and Easter Event/seasonal items (although I don't recall seeing 'non-seasonal only' in the rules)
.. and I've no idea what biome this would/could have gone in
.. or how a chess board fits in to look "a natural part of the core-keeper-world"
(((I'm just making excuses for myself ๐Ÿ˜… )))

Thank YOU for sharing!

Thanks for the shoutout as well! It's appreciated!

built this one out in a meadow biome so we have meadow-music while playing ๐Ÿ™‚

#

also changed the board/floor to using shimmering water with grey + black glass bridges, which gives us plenty of light to see what is going on, and the painted style makes a great grid

I agree nice seeing someone redoing my old design

#

still sad i never got a queen slime from another terraria cros over tho >.<

Yeah, it's a cool concept. Before picking food items way above we considered figurines, but couldn't think of a good scheme to split black/white. So we came up with food items as we were still in the mindset of using planters as well as pedestals.
After seeing your post of slimes vs. cavelings, the theme using figurines 'clicked'.

We used Ivy's as the queen because everyone refers to Ivy as 'her', despite the fact it is just a blob like all the others! We also went for the christmas carrots spiky's for visual distinction. This way we're not using any small blue/purple ones to help avoid quick glance confusion with king/queen. The one we struggled with was the caveling queen, really wanted to use another 'boss' token but none of them felt 'right' in the line-up

I think everyone refers to Ivy as a her because of Poison Ivy from DC, just sub consciously

#

Plus Ivy is a traditionally female name in the real world

True ryan. You know rusty the only reason i chose slimes as the other side was because they dont have faces so it could look like they were all facing forward, wanted originally to use holiday cavelings to look like the players, But can make them turn around >.< also for the queen, i wish we had a second mini of the mad shaman in his second form, but we dont.

#

yeah, it's certainly a cool board setup!
I might see what the farmers look like in the line-up (as rooks?), but I still need to find some of those figurines!
.. then make the Caveling Queen the christmas brute/cook maybe?
I've also contemplated using the HiveMother just so the king/queen pieces are boss/white base units.

Although, we still keep playing with our 'food' set up... and I don't know if that's because we made it first, or it is ever so slightly closer to our 'main base', or the board isn't sparkling (flat painted tiles vs. Shimmering glass), or whatever other reason.

It's still nice having options ...
I'd honestly love the game to have ancient-yoda style collectable chess pieces in it, like an actual in-game set, that you could fully rotate etc

truth i like playing with minis in builds, i would love the ability to rotate them, could use them for more environmental story telling in my base

... and we're back in a fresh 1.0 world... happy to be playing chess keeper again ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

using sunrice as the golden pawns as we don't have 8 golden glow tulips yet ......
