I was getting tired of the torches' constant bright yellow lighting so i tried to make a stone-based setup with glow tulips

on the left is the actual NPC housing

note that this is an earlygame design, as i would definitely be using items from the metropolis otherwise

You can also hide lit floors under the paintable tiles, and you can paint those to recolor the lights, so you could get away with a more bright lit space that uses the glow tulips more decoratively
