I and no doubt many others are spending way too much time just scrolling social media. But it is a huge time sink and makes it feel very bad, when I see, how much time I have just wasted.

Does any of you have some good solutions for this problem?

Furthermore, people, who have conquered similar addictions in the past, what methods did you ise and what are the pitfalls to be wary of?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have addiction to social media but here are things that I observed and it might help.

  1. Feed/Suggestion: Turn off the main page that suggest you videos to watch. Sometimes I just want to look up something on YouTube but when I open YouTube and see something interested, I'll start watching that instead. Later YouTube changed their policy and start not feeding me video because I turned off the watch history, but I found that I never run into this problem again. I only use YouTube for what I need to look up. So turn of suggestion page on these social media could be a good start.
  2. Reschedule: I used to be very addicted to reading fiction novels, which my Asian parents don't appreciate. I realized that if I read them during the day they're gonna find it out someday, since they're active in the day. So although I was still addictive, I force myself to read them only at night when I go to bed or when I'm eating breakfast, so it's no longer a distraction during the day anymore. But then it kind of interupt my sleep schedule, so I force myself to read less and less. Eventually it just became something that's optional, that I can do or not do, and no longer bother my day.
  3. Focus Session: Put your social media away, and do focus session. Do something that's more fun and less boring, such as Duolingo. Then you'll start to like the feeling of doing focus session and you'll do focus session on all your work, and without social media distracting you.

But as I mentioned earlier, I don't really use social media often nor is addicted to it, so these advices might or might not work for social media depend on the situation. Wish you the best on your detoxicity journey.
