#Angus - GST and subscriptions

Hello, thinking about this. I think the only way to restrict region in Checkout is to create a Radar rule that rejects non Australian addresses but that can lead to a poor user experience because the error message to non-AU users will be a generic decline and not really communicate to them why they are getting declined.
To be clear, if Stripe was calculating the GST correctly would you not have to do this restriction?
Yes that's right
we just want to force everyone to pay GST
regardless of what address they put in
We are a strictly australia only business
I am not familiar with AU tax policy, as far as you know does this mean that Stripe is not calculating the Tax correctly? Or is not charging GST to non-AU customers something that makes sense in other contexts just not here?
What I am getting at is that if we are miscalculating, I'd recommend reporting this to our support team so we can fix the behavior. https://support.stripe.com/?contact=true

Yeah that's right, it's not calculating tax correctly.
But the bug is that it's getting their tax location wrong. E.g. I just checked a handful of customers whose address was Australia but their tax location was Austria.
This has cost us thousands of dollars in undercharging so far. Is that support link you gave me the right place to go for this?
Yes, that link has a couple options for getting in contact with our support team
And yeah, a Radar rule would be the way to do this with Checkout. On a custom page you would have more leeway to reject these yourself. Looking in to how exactly that rule would be set up
I am also looking in to whether Stripe tax can allow you to always charge GST in Checkout regardless of address. I know you can set fixed rates but am not familiar with how/if one could be applied here https://stripe.com/docs/payments/checkout/taxes?tax-calculation=tax-rates#fixed-tax-rates
Interesting, those fixed tax rates look like they could work.
Wait a minute, if I'm clear, does this allow me to just manually set a tax rate?
And if so can I save myself the extra 0.4% that stripe is charging me???
WHOOP!!!!!
Yeah, they may work here. As you can tell I don't know AU tax policy, but if you just need a 10% tax that applies on everything you can definitely create a tax rate like that yourself and just not specify the country https://stripe.com/docs/billing/taxes/tax-rates#creating-tax-rates-through-the-api
