I do not think this is easily done using the API since the API only returns the current state of the Stripe records. The Stripe dashboard does some gymnastics to provide historical data as well.

is there a practice for doing things like this? Fetching reports from a backend, perhaps updating it daily on a schedule? can the reporting api not pull these existing reports?

There is not a clear path to fully reproducing the Stripe Dashboard. You can get some reports from the Reporting API but we do not provide information to completely reproduce the Stripe Dashboard.
