Yes, I believe that's one way to check for it - but is there a specific reason you need this?
we sending an email via customerio when trial gets ended, but listenting to status change is not working for us, because the payment still can fail, so we wait until first invoice after trial ended is succeeded and send customerIO event that triggers an email
