Stripe appeared to have acquired TaxJar in 2021 (see https://stripe.com/newsroom/news/taxjar). It seems reasonable that the goal of doing so would be integrating TaxJar into Stripe's product offerings. So it sounds like that is not the case? Do you know if there are plans to do so in the future? I was assuming that Stripe Tax was built off the TaxJar API (basically a wrapper around it), and that the purchase of TaxJar further cemented that relationship going forward. Totally just guesses, but that's why I wanted to ask.
Hello! We do have plans to integrate TaxJar into Stripe and end up with a single product/offering, but for now Stripe Tax and TaxJar are still separate.
Stripe Tax is not a wrapper around TaxJar.
Okay, so just to clarify, today Stripe Tax is a proprietary product creating by Stripe (totally disjoint from TaxJar), but with the recent purchase of TaxJar there are plans to integrate TaxJar into the Stripe Tax product in the future. Do I have that right? When integrating TaxJar into Stripe Tax in the future, is the plan that it Stripe Tax would become a wrapper around TaxJar at that time?
I can't speak to specific future plans and how things will play out. I doubt there will be a "wrapper" situation, but that depends on what you mean when you use that word. 🙂
Why do you ask? It sounds like you may have a specific concern?
I guess I am curious if the brains of Stripe Tax would be built on the data from TaxJar.
I ask just because we are looking at how we may want to integrate tax into our custom integration. Using Stripe Tax and the Orders API is an option, though we don't love how it requires configuration of our products within Stripe's API (tighter coupling to Stripe). Overall we are leaning toward using TaxJar and hitting their API directly, then configuring the full amount of the Payment Intent (including tax) when charging the order total through Stripe. I was mostly just curious if Stripe Tax was using TaxJar anyways in terms of how it was determining taxes.
To my knowledge Stripe Tax and TaxJar, from a technical perspective, are entirely separate today. It sounds like TaxJar might be a better fit for you, so I would recommend going with that.
