i think i understand but what exactly if that domain used for? will that be where the paylinks etc be hosted?

That is the URL that will be used when your customer is redirected to a Checkout Session

We handle everything on the hosted page in terms of collecting card details and info. This custom domain helps to make that page feel more like it is integrated with your site instead of it feeling like a redirect to a third party
