Hi there!

#

You're right in this case. While you can try to create a payment intent prior to capturing those funds, there's no guarantee the funds will be available for capture once you're ready to create the charge.

#

As for your final question, no funds will be moved to your Stripe merchant account until the payment intent is captured. Those funds will remain with the customer until captured.

I think I wasn't clear about my last question. We're worried that even if we do a preauth with manual capture, and then immediately void/cancel that payment intent, that the bank/credit card network of the customer will still show the funds as pending or held for 24+ hours

So if we do that, a preauth with an immediate cancel, can you confirm that it won't show the funds as being held by the bank/credit card network to the customer?

#

So we're not worried about capturing funds in this scenario, we just want a signal about if there are funds available without tying up or affecting the customer.

This is not a recommended approach. Many banks will show the authorization to the customer and may even hold the funds for a few days.

Ah yeah, that would be a deal breaker for us then. Do you know of anything similar that would be recommended?

this is just forbidden

#

you can't just go and authorize cards like that just to get a feel for whether they are likely to be declined later

#

banks and card networks won't let you do that

#

If you need to guarantee funds on date X, you need to charge upfront say on day X-7

Ok, I see, thanks for the clarification

Most businesses who ship goods monthly for example charge a week in advance to ensure that they get the money in time

#

so that's one solution. Another one would be to email your customer to come and pay in advance otherwise
