hi! In general our coupons/promo codes APIs are for reducing the amount of the initial payment. For your case, a trial period seems like the right option yep.
I don't see any direct issue with offering subscriptions different billing periods, either way you can pass trial_period_days:30 when creating the subscription, and the first payment will happen at the end of that trial period, and the next payment happens a [month|year|etc] after that date.
