SEPA Direct Debit isn't a card payment method, so I'm not sure if this setting applies.
I am looking more at this setting and wondering if it applies to the first invoice in a subscription or only the 2nd+

Sorry for the long delay! After investigating this with a colleague, it looks like these settings apply to card only and only after the first invoice.
If the first payment of a SEPA Direct Debit fails, probably no email will be sent by Stripe. So that's something you will have to handle on your end.
