Hello! With Payment Methods there is no longer the concept of a Customer-wide default. The closest analog is setting a default on the Customer for Invoice payments only. For other payments you need to specify the Payment Method ID you want to use along with the Customer ID every time.

thanks @tall palm .. luckily I am using invoicing so that was a quick fix.
