Whoops, I misread this initially and thought you were referring to the invoice.upcoming event rather than the email. I'm not familiar with the email triggers and don't have a way to test that. I'm going to try checking with teammates.

The event I'm more confident you shouldn't receive due to its description:
Occurs X number of days before a subscription is scheduled to create an invoice that is automatically charged—where X is determined by your subscriptions settings. Note: The received Invoice object will not have an invoice ID.

we should not get the event invoice.upcoming

Yes, and based on what my teammate and I are seeing the email won't be triggered either when using send_invoice.

and they seem to say that the reminder email is sent out even if the customer billing method is send invoice

Hhmmmm, I'm really not sure. Do you by chance have an example of a customer from live mode that would have gone through this flow? If so, we can try looking at them to see what happened.

i see that Next invoice for subscription will be sent on Feb 28
but just want to make sure about emails about upcoming renewals

We looked at that customer and their upcoming invoice. Based on your account settings it looks like upcoming invoice emails are set to be sent 15 days before the renewal, which would have been a couple days ago for that customer and we did not see any evidence that an email was sent to them.

No, based on what we're seeing the upcoming invoice email is not sent when using the send_invoice collection method.

as the customer has billing_method send invoice
Yup, rather than speculating and guessing we looked at that customer as an example of what the system will actually do, and it did not send the renewal reminder email for that user.
