hi! so to be clear we are talking about using Checkout to start a subscription, and that failing?
if they try a card and it fails, they get an error message on the Checkout page and try again. Once they successfully pay, the initial subscription payment is completed and that's it, there's no other previous payment being retried, so I'm a bit confused by the question.
yes, when it fails, users get an error message, but they leave the Checkout page. and enter the Checkout page again. This time they choose another card to pay, and it succeeds. So now users have two payments, one failed, and the other succeeded.

I have this question because the doc says:
When payments fail, Stripe retries them using the Smart Retries feature. This automatically re-attempts payment when cards are declined according to your Dashboard settings.

so in which situations the payment failed and Stripe will retry it?
for recurring payments, but the payment at the start of a subscription is not one of those
