It was for a subscription, they canceled the subscription but there is an outstanding payment, as a gesture of goodwill I said I'd just cancel the payment

Does this mean it will stop retrying?

If you want to be sure that retries will stop you can void the Invoice (I believe updating it as uncollectible will also work)
