But if you were to charge say $1 as a one time fee, you'd do this using a trial. Create a Checkout session for the $99 price and a $1 one-time price and a trial period of 5 days. That would charge $1 for the one-time price and then after 5 days you get $99 a month

The minimum doesn't change, you can not get a $0.01 or $0.49 charge/payment

ok so by wanting to charge for the trial period, the minimum is $0.50 and that's by adding in a one-time price correct? otherwise the trial period is free by default?

and also if we go with the one-time price approach, it's also correct to say that the customer is charged immediately for the one-time price and then at regular intervals for subscription price at the cycle dates?
