ok, if i create a subscription, would this charge the user again?

since the user has already made a payment, i want to only assign a subscription but not charge the user again

it would charge them again by default yes

so maybe experiment with adding a trial period as part of the subscription to avoid that

yes, you'd probably want to add a trial period of a year in that case, so they don't get charged until next year , if you already charged them in a separate one-time payment for this year
