You may get pending if you account has insufficient funds to cover the refund, and it would stay that way until your balance was sufficient, either from a top up or from payment you collect later
So will I always get a status of pending in that case? I'm thrown off by the word may.

It means the status of a Refund may be pending under some circumstances, like the one described above.

The exact wording on the page is
If Stripe can’t debit the remaining amount from your bank account, your refunds may go into a pending status . This seems to imply that it may not go into a status of pending even in this exact situation. So I have some doubts.
