After a payment fails, a customer has about 23 hours to make a successful payment, after which the subscription will expire. If their subscription has expired, you will need to create a new subscription for them. https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/overview#subscription-lifecycle
And Stripe will not automatically charge them on that last period again so that would be something you need to track and charge yourself if you feel it is appropriate.
