Our documentation lists it as optional, but let me run a quick test to see if omitting it results in that null value I was seeing earlier.

So I do see headline was set to null when I omitted it from the request. Double checking how that behaves in my portal.

I've just confirmed that if you do not specify a headline when creating the portal configuration, and then use that configuration when creating a portal session, then the portal will display the default headline.

If you provide the desired headline when creating the configuration, then it should display as expected.

I'm going to also collect information from this discussion to take back to our teams as feedback on a possible improvement to this flow.
