What setting are you referring to specifically? Where is it in the dashboard?
If you go to a customer, and click the "Edit" button for the "Details" section on the left hand side, it pops up the dialog.

it also appears that you can specify multiple emails in the dashboard if you comma separate them, but I can't do the same thing via the API for the customer's email field.
Unfortunately that setting is not set-able in the API
And yes unfortunately it is not possible to add comma separated emails like that in the API.
alright no problem. let's just call it a feature request then 🙂
