I'm taking a look at whether we have existing feature requests for this. But I know that in some cases, we can't determine what the card type is just based on its number, so there does have to be a backend check
We do have a beta feature, that would let you block American Express from being entered on the Payment Element. Though this wouldn't be useful, if Stripe does start supporting Amex in the future.
