Yes, it is possible to update a PaymentIntent (including attaching a customer) between collectPaymentMethod and confirmPaymentIntent, provided:

  • Set updatePaymentIntent = true in CollectPaymentIntentConfiguration
  • After collectPaymentMethod() succeeds, make server-side API calls to create the customer and update the PaymentIntent
  • Call confirmPaymentIntent() within 30 seconds of collectPaymentMethod() completing
  • For recurring payments, set setup_future_usage: "off_session" when creating the PaymentIntent (before collect)
