Hello, I don't have stats on how reliable it is but my understanding is that it is very reliable. Our support team may have more info if you reach out but I don't know if there is a good stat for this. I do know a lot of companies exclusively save payment intents without charging them upfront.
SetupIntents should do everything they can to ensure that the second charge succeeds. That said, if your first payment is online, you should save the payment method through a payment intent instead. If you do SetupIntent, then PaymentIntent there are two separate auths which can cause additional friction and in some scenarios can mean a user has to do 3DS twice for a single transaction.
