i was testing this in sandbox, and it stayed on for at least 15 minutes.... unsure if prod works the same way

There is not an auto-timeout. This is something the POS system would need to control
so, it would stay on waiting for payment for hours on end?

Ah, this has been discussed and the current behavior (no timeout) is considered the best option
ok then... sadly, I will have to write more code. as our pos integrates with many payment processors, and every other one times out.

Yeah, I will flag that other payment processors have a default timeout.
