the only way forward here is to cancel the existing subscription and start a new one

pending_if_incomplete is best suited with synchronous payment methods such as cards

i figured that - unfortunately we need to support both, sync and async. But I guess a simple check "if subscription is paused and customer used sepa_debit, then create a new subscription and attach the payment method and set that active without a trial" is the easiest way. And thats what you suggested, right?
