I am hoping this isn't the case with our live environment as well?
In this case, the test card doesn't appear to be working exactly as expected. But in live mode, it's possible that a real card can request 3DS authentication, like happened here
But I see that your subscription update did seem to fail due to lack of successful payment, and you see the pending_update in the Subscription response, as expected: https://docs.stripe.com/billing/subscriptions/pending-updates#update-subscription
