Here's some more detail on the error:

invalid_request_error - destination
Attempting to create a transfer of aud to a destination that supports usd, but this account has another external account that supports aud. You should transfer to ba_XXX to avoid currency exchange fees.

It sounds like there is a limitation to the destination where it needs to match the currency type if a bank has been setup in the settings? My team was curious if it was possible to send from aud to usd regardless.

After investigating, it seems that this isn't possible. Can you provide some more context as to why you need to do this so I can potentially report this as a feature request?

My team is interested in performing manual payouts outside of our default aud bank account as needed, since we are working through some feedback with our aud bank and we have a usd bank set up

Thanks for confirming. For my understanding, it sounds like this feature of manual payouts to a different bank account is only possible if it's within the same currency?

It is possible to payout an AUD balance to a USD bank account if it's the only account available. In that case, FX fees might apply. This is why the existing behavior is to try and avoid unnecessary FX fees.

Got it, I see. Yeah, they were interested in this, regardless of the fees, if it was possible to know what they were upfront, but it sounds like the API request for that is blocked.

I think they would be interested in a manual balance conversion! What is the process for that, do I need to reach out to Support? I can share out the balance amount they are interested in transferring. The $2.00 in the request I submitted was just a test
