I don't believe that's something you can do via Customer Portal as far as I know
Sounds like you basically want to move the billing cycle anchor to "now + the next billing period"?
If so, adding a trial manually would be the right way to go about this

Ok. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure that was the correct approach.
Would an alternative be to set the billing cycle anchor to 1 year from today or would that possibly lead to side effects that could cause issues?

I don't think you can manually set the billing cycle anchor to a future date. A trial is a workaround to do that. Otherwise the API only supports setting the anchor to now
