This was in fact changed intentionally with Basil:

Previously the Subscription was created before the Checkout Session completed and would transition to active once the Session completed. Now the Checkout Session doesn't get created till after the Session completes.
The Subscription key should be populated in the checkout.session.completed event

oh I see, I've read the breaking changes but probably missed this one.
I guess I will just rely on "status" key to let the user know the payment was successful and then wait for the webhook to apply perks
