Also - I think some payouts are being deposited with the related statement description. But I would like to try to handle my initial question first. Because I need to identify where the payouts came from
You can use List Payout API with Stripe-Account header as the connected account ID to retrieve the payout list:

Do I then have to pull the balance transaction to find the amount?
Each payout object contains the total payout amount in amount parameter: https://docs.stripe.com/api/payouts/object#payout_object-amount
You shouldn't need to use balance transaction
