from the subscription events, their old coupon is removed, then new coupon is added, then they attempt to charge the upgrade but the upgrade fails and their sub just ends up with the new coupon which should only be applied on successful upgrade (since it is intended to be an upgrade coupon)

Yep, that does seem odd/unexpected given that the upgrade itself is pending and expires

I want to report this to the team to investigate if expected, and how you should expect to handle that

This is not a full solution though, since it does not revert to the original/existing coupon this customer subscription had

(if this were in place, the subscription would end up with no discount, since the product limitation would not apply to the original price/product)

So it prevent over-discounting on upgrade, but is not a full fix to revert the coupon

hmm, definitely don't want the user to pay more if their subscription upgrade fails
