ah actually I think I've answered my own question, what i'm seeing is a function of the test environment
A BECS Direct Debit PaymentIntent typically remains in a processing state for 2 business days after submission to the BECS network. This submission happens once per day. Once the payment succeeds, the associated PaymentIntent status updates from processing to succeeded.
