had to reopen because prior thread closed. this is for when a user installs the app from the marketplace

I believe the doc has already explained the flow
- On your site, the user clicks a link that redirects them to Stripe.
- On Stripe, the user selects the appropriate account and accepts permissions for installing the app.
- After the app is installed, authentication is complete and the user is redirected to a defined URI.
but i don't think this explains what happens when a user installs from app marketplace
they're not on my site to begin with

this redirects to the dashboard, which is consitent with every other app i've installed
but when i do it via the testing install link (for my local app), it redirects the browser to my backend endpoint

It will redirect to your website to complete the OAuth process.

and so are these apps that redirect to the stripe dashboard just doing another redirect?

It depends, if the app uses Platform key authenticaiton method, it will redirect to Stripe Dashboard upon installation.
