Is there a particular guide or document you were following that suggested to you that Venmo was an option?

Yeah, the only way Venmo could only be offered as an External Payment Method if you have a direct integration with Venmo: https://docs.stripe.com/payments/external-payment-methods

its possible that that page is referring to that, but as I mentioned we don't support Venmo as a payment method natively.
